On October 18, 2006, I addressed the Youngstown, Ohio Chapter of the Saint John Chrysostom Society. They are a group dedicated to ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Past speakers have included Father Thomas Hopko, former dean of Saint Vladimir’s Orthodox Theology Seminary, Crestwood, NY; Archbishop Vsevelod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA; Bishop John Michael Botean of the Romanian-Byzantine Catholic Church; Jack Figel, national chair of the Society, and other prominent clergymen. The topic of the presentation was, “The Art of God Incarnate: Understanding the Spirituality of Icons.” The evening began with the celebration of Vespers in honor of Saint Luke the Evangelist, and who according to tradition wrote the very first icon. The event was very well attended and appreciated by all. Many thanks go to Mr. Vito Carchedi and Father Daniel Rohan for organizing my visit.
